Webinar: Every student counts: inclusive practices for maths education

How can we create maths classrooms where every student feels they belong and can succeed?

This webinar explores research on inclusive STEM learning environments and introduces the 8 principles for inclusive STEM education from Get into STEM. Consider how these principles can support classroom practice and school culture.

Practical strategies and resources will be shared to help you create inclusive and responsive maths learning environments that support all students.

Presented by: Maths in Schools team -Dr Rebecca Vivian, Jaclyn Steffan and Toni Falusi

Audience: Classroom teachers, curriculum leaders and school leaders interested in inclusion and improving outcomes in mathematics

Webinar: Creative maths through art, algorithms and AI

Explore the connection between mathematics, art and digital technologies. This session shows how students can use patterns, symmetry and algorithms to create mathematical artwork, building spatial reasoning and computational thinking.

With practical classroom examples using tools like Scratch, GeoGebra and AI, discover engaging ways to make mathematical thinking visible and meaningful.

Webinar: Dive into data - it's all about statistics

Explore how a familiar card game such as 'Top Trumps' can be used to support Foundation to Year 4 students to collect, sort, represent, compare and interpret data. Participants will consider how students can use themed card decks to investigate questions, identify patterns, compare values, create data displays and justify decisions using evidence. The session also includes ways students can create their own card decks, use digital tools to represent data and connect the activity with Science and Digital Technologies.

Webinar: Game with no Rules - micro:bit, Python, chance and data for Years 7 and 8

This webinar extends the Code, Chance, Create approach to Years 7–8, building on the Game with No Rules to integrate Digital Technologies and Mathematics.

Students will use Python and a micro:bit to run a simple chance experiment, record results in a spreadsheet and analyse the data. They will move beyond describing events as ‘likely’ or ‘unlikely’ to using numbers to measure chance.

You’ll see how students can:

  • collect and organise data from repeated experiments
  • use frequency to analyse results
  • compare individual and class data
  • explore how results compare with expected outcomes

The session focuses on practical ways to extend classroom games into deeper chance and data investigations.

Webinar: Maths and storytelling using picture books

Mathematical thinking goes beyond finding the correct answer. It involves noticing patterns, asking questions, making connections and explaining reasoning.

This webinar explores how picture books can support primary students to identify and engage with mathematical ideas in stories and illustrations. Drawing on Professor Chris Matthews’ Goompi Model and Maths as Storytelling approach, you’ll see how students can move from everyday observations to mathematical representations, connecting language, visuals and symbols.

The session will also highlight ways to value story, culture and connection to place, supporting links to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures priority.

Who should attend: Primary teachers

What to bring: A picture book to explore during the session
