You, the family, are your child’s first maths educator. You will help shape their learning throughout their lives both in and out of school. Positive actions and attitudes about maths at home make it easier for your child to enjoy maths and achieve success in maths at school.

There are many small activities and conversations at home that can make a big difference for children learning mathematics. Travelling, shopping, cooking and making are all great times to talk about numbers, measurements, shapes. Encourage your child to count, compare, and to explain what they are thinking. Remind them that it’s not about getting it ‘right’ or doing things ‘fast’ It’s often good to give children lots of time to struggle with an idea until they understand it.
